NUMERICAL MODELS OF EXPLOSIVE VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS AND ASSESSMENT OF THEIR HAZARD
Call Euraxess
Development and application of numerical codes for simulating the fragmentation, ejection, transport and deposition of eruptive products from the conduit to the atmospheric domain. Sensitivity analysis of numerical models to input parameters and different physical formulations of the transport equations. Development of computer codes of the physical-mathematical models and for postprocessing and visualisation of simulation results. Application of the developed models for the evaluation of eruptive scenarios and hazard assessment at selected Italian and foreign volcanoes (e.g. Vesuvius, Campi Flegrei, Soufriere Hills, Mount Saint Helens, etc.).
Description
The successful candidate will work for 18 months at the INGV in Pisa, within a research group internationally renown as a leader in the physics of volcanic processes and numerical simulation of volcano dynamics. The research will be developed in the frame of a highly cooperative international network comprising 13 Institutions from 8 European countries forming the NEMOH consortium (see the NEMOH website for further information). The appointment includes mandatory secondments, to be agreed upon with the successful candidate, for a total period of 1.5 to 5 months, at one or more institutions within the NEMOH consortium.
Candidates must meet the following requisites: 1) any nationality, but not having resided or carried out their main activity (job, studies, …) in Italy for more than 1 year in the past 3 years; 2) within 4 years from the degree that in their country gives access to a PhD; 3) not having completed a PhD. Current PhD students can apply.
