MSc (Research) Position available: Computational Volcano-Seismology
Seismology Lab., School of Geological Sciences, University College Dublin.
Euraxess Call
The Geophysics Group at University College Dublin seeks a highly motivated MSc candidate (Early Stage Researcher) to investigate the ability of “state of the art” inversion procedures to successfully capture the nature of shallow volcanic seismic sources (in particular long-period (LP) sources). Since seismic and deformation sources are closely related to the overall dynamics within the volcanic edifice, quantifying our ability to accurately invert for such sources is of great importance for further advances in the field.
This project will include:
(i) using numerical simulations for wave propagation through a complex medium with topography,
(ii) using the source inversion tools available in the UCD Seismology Lab.,
(iii) extensive collaboration with other groups in the NEMOH Consortium, especially in deformation studies.
In particular, we are interested in inverting for seismic sources due to the physical processes which generate both the seismic and deformation signals observed on volcanoes.
The successful candidate will learn how to use software for seismic data handling, and will become familiar with developing and running numerical simulations. They will also study relationships between seismicity and deformation on volcanoes.
Existing basic programming skills in C, FORTRAN or Matlab are desirable. A university level qualification in geophysics, seismology, physics, applied mathematics or similar is required.
Standard Marie Curie conditions for eligibility apply. For more information on these or for general enquiries, please email Dr Aoife Braiden, geophysics ucd.ie.
To apply for the position, please forward a CV and cover letter to Dr Braiden (geophysics ucd.ie).
