DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
The goal of the project is to develop and to implement a highly efficient parallelized code for modelling atmospheric transport of volcanic ash and aerosols at scales from regional to global. Research objectives include: i) forecasting of ash dispersal using ensemble strategies for eruption source parameters and quasi real time data assimilation, ii) evaluation of volcanic ash hazard and, iii) study feedback effects between fine volcanic ash and aerosols and atmosphere.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
The successful candidate will work for three years (January 2013 – December 2015) at the Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (CASE) Department of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS, www.bsc.es). The CASE Department hosts more than 40 multidisciplinary researchers having backgrounds in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering and Computer Science.
REQUISITES:
Background in atmospheric sciences, numerical modelling and physical volcanology and a Master degree will be strongly considered.
The candidates must meet the following requisites:
1) any nationality, but not having resided or carried out their main activity (job or studies) in Spain for more than 1 year in the past 3 years;
2) no more than 4 years may have passed since completion of the degree that in their country gives access to a PhD;
3) not having completed a PhD. Current PhD students can apply.
