DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
The goal of the project is a thorough investigation of the uncertainties related to the inversion of geophysical signals at active volcanoes. The successful candidate will investigate how model simplifications and data errors affect the estimate of the volcanic source properties (i.e., location, dimension, geometry and strength). The development of a computer code for geophysical signal inverse analysis, and its application to both synthetic and ground-truth time series is included as a part of the research to be performed.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
The successful candidate will work for two years at the INGV in Pisa, within a composite research group whose members operates in different fields, including observational volcano seismology, the physics of volcanic processes, and the numerical simulation of volcano dynamics. The candidate must possess a solid background in math and physics, and be very familiar with the treatment of geophysical time series. Good computer programming skills and knowledge of Unix-like operating systems are also required.
