DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
The aim of the research project is to cooperate to the development and application of a model and computer code for the simulation of coupled magma-rock dynamic processes. The numerical code GALES for finite-element simulation of the dynamics of multi-component, compressible magmas will be extended to include the effects of deformable elastic walls and surrounding rocks. This will be achieved via coupling the Navier-Stokes equations describing magma dynamics to the elasto-dynamics equations for momentum conservation in heterogeneous solid rocks with free surface and topography. The code, based on a discontinuous Galerkin solver, will be developed in C++, and implemented for parallel architectures. The execution of test simulations for code benchmarking, as well as applications to real or hypothetical cases of volcanological interest, is part of the research to be performed.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
The successful candidate will work for three years at the INGV in Pisa, within a research group internationally renown as a leader in the physics of volcanic processes and numerical simulation of volcano dynamics. The research will be developed in the frame of a highly cooperative international network comprising 13 Institutions from 8 European countries forming the NEMOH consortium (see the NEMOH website for further information). The appointment includes mandatory secondments, to be agreed upon with the successful candidate, for a total period of 3 to 9 months, at one or more major international institutions performing top level research of interest for the purposes of the present research, either within or outside the NEMOH consortium.
REQUISITES:
Candidates must meet the following requisites:
1) any nationality, but not having resided or carried out their main activity (job, studies, …) in Italy for more than 1 year in the past 3 years;
2) within 4 years from the degree that in their country gives access to a PhD;
3) not having completed a PhD. Current PhD students can apply.
