Volcano-Seismology, School of Geological Sciences, University College Dublin
PhD Position available
This project is funded through the EU Marie Curie, Initial Training Network, NEMOH
The seismology group at University College Dublin seeks a highly motivated PhD candidate (Early Stage Researcher) to investigate the relationship between long-period (LP) volcano-seismicity and small deformations of the volcano edifice. Our preliminary results from LP source inversions, combined with numerical simulations, suggest that such a link may exist although it is not predicted by currently accepted source models. Since LP events are often precursors to volcanic eruptions, this study will be an important contribution to improving our understanding of these events, which are still poorly understood.
This project will include: (i) exploring new ways of detecting ‘small’, spatially limited displacements in the summit region using seismometer and other methods (e.g. lidar), (ii) analysing seismic data for LP events recorded at several volcanoes (including their detection, source location, source inversion) and (iii) using analytical and numerical simulations to calculate 3D wave propagation and deformation field on volcanoes.
The successful candidate will learn how to use software for seismic data handling, and will become familiar with developing and running numerical simulations. Exposure to formal training in a range of transferable skills (proposal writing, innovation, presentation skills etc) will form part of the PhD programme.
Existing basic programming skills in C, FORTRAN or Matlab are an advantage. A university level qualification in geophysics, seismology, physics, applied mathematics or similar is required.
This project is funded through the EU Marie Curie, Initial Training Network, NEMOH (Numerical, Experimental and Stochastic Modelling of Volcanic Processes, http://www.nemoh-itn.eu). The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with other members of NEMOH consortium, travel and present their work at international conferences, NEMOH consortium meetings and workshops.
